Pullman hits out at nitwits

Just ahead of the premiere for the Golden Compass, Philip Pullman has hit out against Bill Donohoe, President of the league of North American Catholics, commenting in an interview with Newsweek “Why don’t we trust readers? Why don’t we trust filmgoers? Oh, it causes me to shake my head with sorrow that such nitwits [...]

Realising imaginary worlds

Erica Wagner of the Times has hit the nail firmly on the head, in my view, in her article on the forthcoming Golden Compass film and the assertion that she has already seen the film in her own mind though her imagination. That’s something that Pullman has managed - along with Lewis, Tolkien and Le [...]

Abrams get Cloverfield with Matt Reeves

The Times has a link to the trailer for the JJ Abrams vehicle, Cloverfield, which appears to use digital video to portray the effect on ordinary people in a monster attack on New York (Fictionally, how can anybody get insureance in that city the amount of times it gets trashed). I hope that Matt Reeves [...]

Werner Herzog talks Rescue Dawn

Werner Herzog gave an interview to the Guardian today about his new film, Rescue Dawn. Despite the things I’ve read about him (largely being nuts), I’ve got time for his films.

Heroes Season 2 to improve says Kring

Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes, has apologised for the slow start to series 2 (rumours of which tend to fall into this is awful) and that it wil get back to doing what it’s good (certainly not romance) after the Writer’s Strike ends. He commented, “The message is that we’ve heard the complaints and [...]

Beowulf the movie - the monster’s mother that got (s)laid

I’ve just got back from seeing Beowulf and I’m really glad I saw it. Avary and Gaiman’s screenplay takes the Old English poem and remakes it for the screen in an engaging fashion whilst keeping the text alive. There is a beautiful symmetry to the narrative which transliterates the poetic style and techniques to the [...]

Ray Winstone talks Beowulf, animation and one packs

Ray Winstone is interviewed by the Times today about his role in Beowulf which opens tomorrow and gently points out that skin tight body suits do not become a man in his fifties with a one pack. I’d never go to seeĀ  a film with him in it to see him but everytime I’ve either [...]

Beowulf too scary?

Angelina Jolie has commented that the forthcoming Beowulf movie that it is too scary for a 12A audience.
Now I’ve not seen it yet as it opens on Friday but it smacks slightly of a molly coddling attitude towards children, an increasing wrapping them up in cotton wool. Is fiction too scary for them or its [...]
