If you go into the woods today… – The Guardian on theatrical fairy tales

Lyn Gardner, theatre critic for the Guardian, has an overview of the current run of theatrical fairy tales. One might take her to task about the Grimm’s having the originals (they anthologised them from Huguenot sources at the very least) but I’m heartened by her sketch. She gives a nod to the fact that the original tales were for an teen / adult audience and were very much sanitised for children later but I wonder if the increasing violence is also testament to the way that our views of children have changed. Cossetting them away was one thing but no there appears to be an admission that they are part of the world.
