A couple of weeks ago, I read Borrobil but couldn’t see anything on the author with the Wikipedia page being deleted. I also tried the continuum encyclopedia and the Oxford companion but no beans. I should have known that the essential Encyclopedia of Fantasy would contain a short article.
Richard Dalbey’s article gives his dates as 1897 to 1963 and that he was an archaeologist and an historian. Borrobil appears to be the most fantastic with The Eildon Tree (1947) and The Flag from the Isles (1951) featuring the children but being more historical in tone. Though I’ve read neither of the later books, he does seem to have an interest in the mythical fragment of the British landscape which was developed by Susan Cooper, Alan Garner and so on in the 1960s.
Interesting, I just read Borrobil for the 1st time and wondered how it had eluded me as a fantasy-loving kid back in the 70′s. I enjoy historical fantasy too so will look out for the other books by the author.
