Maximum Ride, minimum exposure

Crichoux, over at Bookwyrm Chrysalis, has a link to this NY Times article about James Patterson complaining that he wants his children’s books at front of store because they get lost in the children’s section. He wants parents, or at least from the article mothers / women, to pick up his kind of book for their children to read and enjoy. He also admits to a co-writer, Gabrielle Charbonnet, for the series.

It sounds suspiciously like these books may not have sold in the numbers his adult ones have done and that he is cry forĀ  “waaah-mbulance”.

Now I’ve got that out of my system, it is potentially an issue for bookselling, that authors such as Patterson, will demand front of house attention n for their name alone. I’d rather walk into a store which has new and interesting titles being promoted rather than the serried dump piles of 3 for 3 or “buy one get one half price”.

How about we try a new tack and actually publish interesting books and promote on the merits of the text? Too radical?
