Roger Sutton over at the Horn Book‘s blog has echoed one of his reader comments about a desire for a Gothic revival. His comments seem to be timed with the Daphne du Maurier revival last year (the centenary of her birth) and re-reading of Jamaica Inn. I’ve only read Rebecca and some of the sequels to it.
The Gothic is not the easiest of modes as it relies on a clever balance of hyperbole and reality which is extremely easay to get wrong. However when the engine is running correctly, it runs well. Its exciting and blends horror and romance with, potentially, a wider appeal.
Roger questions whether du Maurier still does something for teens but I wonder if the Gothic does the same?
