Rocket powered X-Wing ready for take off

OMG, Gizmodo have got a picture story of a 21 foot long X-Wing that actually flies with rocket power. The launch is scheduled for next week and it even has an R2D2 unit in the back and the X wings take around 35 seconds to deploy into position. Lets hope the flight lasts that long and that pictures are posted.

UPDATE: The X-Wing exploded due to the stress of takeoff. Gizmodo has this report.  Shame as potentially it was an excellent project - looking forward to hearing them rebuild a stronger version for flight…

  1. [...] You know this is one of the daftest but at the same time most brilliant crackpot schemes I’ve heard recently - yes, it is unneccesary, sure you could be doing something else with your time and expertise, but my gods isn’t it just fabulously, stupidly brilliant? Makes me smile to think people will get together to build something like this for pure pleasure; may the Force be with them for the actual flight. For managing to combine both science and science fiction to an extreme level I hereby name our gallant X-Wing ground crew as the Geeks of the Week. Gizomodo has much more information and a whole pile of pics detailing the construction of the X-Wing. Thanks go to Iain at Yatterings for kindly sending me the link.     Print this Story    Send to a Friend [...]
