Lewis Shiner sets his fiction free

Lewis Shiner has raised his flag for free fiction on the web and has placed his short fiction on his Fiction Liberation Front website in both HTML and PDF format. He is one of the cool people of cyberpunk and sf but has never really gained the respect his writing deserves.

Clumsy hands - The Simpsons movie

Matt Groening has promised a deliberately clumsy movie in the forthcoming Simpsons movie. It marks a change from the perfect CGI animation (which have their place) that we have recently had - a reminder of the skill that also goes into drawing.

Second Life, Metaverse

Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash createdthe Metaverse which was the inspiration for Second Life but would he have dreamed of a conversation like this on the Wonderland blog? I really ought to re-read Snow Crash and see if it stands the test of time.

Life on Mars

The BBC have announced that Keeley Hawes (from Spooks and Tipping the Velvet) is to play opposite Philip Glenister’s Gene Hunt in the next series of Life on Mars. I’m a little apprehensive as I loved the first two series which worked really well. It airs in the New Year.

Orientalism in the Arabian Nights

I’m not getting into the ins and outs of the title, Arabian Nights, as it has a variety of meanings depending on translation and period but reading Sinbad and Aladdin has made me think of the nature of Orientalism and the first French translations.

Heroines in fantasy

In the Guardian today, Laura Barton discusses the role of the heroine in fiction and the somewhat dearth of them. Which to me seems odd. This comes off the back of Nancy Drew coming to the screen, but it ignores possibly the best known heroine - Hermione Grainger. No her name is not on the [...]

She balanced the Doctor neatly in the episode to show how alien he is and, ultimately, amoral in his pursuit of balance. All w have to do now is [...]

Digging Hills - Neal Asher interviewed

Neal Asher, whose Hilldiggers was reviewed a couple of days ago on the blog, kindly answered some questions about it.
UPDATE: Neal is signing books at Forbidden Planet on July 7th.
Who or what are your influences?
As I say in the acknowledgements in The Skinner, ‘…those excellent people whose names stretch through the alphabet from Aldiss to [...]

Supernatural - Hellmouth and nearly tied up loose ends

Call it what you will, the boys shut a hellmouth.
That’s being slightly churlish though since the creators have set up a fine ending though. Even the get out of jail card free card wasn’t entirely played and the balance is still there but what Dean now he’s made his deal? They’ve destroyed the demon who [...]
