Revenge is best served after radiation

The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning is a prequel graphic novel to the Wes Craven film and has a certain schlocky charm. Whilst the main coverage of the film is for its gross out horror, there is a neat little story about the effects of radiation and the b-movie mutant fear. These are truly modenr monsters and its rather scary how easily they have been forgotten. In fact, it sometimes feels as if the Cold War and Nuclear Arms race didn’t exist - now that’s a really scary thought. Palmiotti and Gray’s writing moves you from feeling vaguely sorry for the radiated children and into sheer revulsion at their acts and Higgins’s art adds to the sense of schlock horror.
