Harry Potter and the Aching Wrists
Its arrived and damn it, I put my money on the wrong death. Oh well, I had thought that the ending which did occur would win out. Hey ho.
I’ve just come back from the Sectus HP conference (though I missed Dav Langford’s event as I was wading through the other stream of seminars) and it was very odd wandering around the University of Westminster seeing the place full of fans (mostly in House colours) reading the latest HP.
I cannot say that I’m disappointed with the book (it is also refreshingly smaller than the last two) and it ties up the loose ends of the story as it goes through. Far darker in tone, any attentive reader will work out what is going to happen but it is not the jurney’s end as how Rowling takes you there that is intriguing.
These are not the most literary book ever but they are engaging and fun which is perhaps more important. I do feel a little sad for the scant few reviews I’ve read which have said: its all for children. Well yes but there is room for adult readers (and those of you with the adult jackets - shame!) but there is, just don’t expect a turn in the vein of Pullman. No review is going to dent the popularity of these books and it will be interesting to see how well they do in a few years.
