Print on Demand
Jim Macdonald over at Making Light has this piece about the push to print on demand books. Having worked in academic publishing (in a former life), I’m surprised this has taken so long to arrive in the fiction world.
Yes, its bad for authors because bookshops are not generally known for stocking the book so the customer has to order it. The bookshop can get it but its not the same as being able to put your hand on the book there and then.
There is a good point in this in that works can be kept in print but I suspect that this only really works for non-fiction. The House of Stratus p.o.d. publisher collapse anyone?
