The Making Light blog has an interesting article on it about the New York times article. They use Gore Vidal’s definition of “book chat” - an article which is designed to tell you that its okay to read and like an author.

Having worked in bookselling, I really ought not to be surprised or at least more immune to bouts of vomiting at articles like this. Especially, tbf in Oxford. If reading is a dying art then frankly its down to the superior attitudes of people reading what is thought to be proper rather than just getting down and enjoying an author or book for its own sake.
