Putting the pieces together – Jigsaw by Garry Kilworth reviewed

Garry Kilworth’s Jigsaw is a strange beast of a book like its central conceit.

Max is being brought up by his father on a series of archaeological digs. He and his brother are busy having adventures and befriend the American rivals. What neither of the parties realise is that he has rebuilt a parchment that creates the Ur-beast who will give birth to the mythical beasts. Chaos unfolds as the beast is recreated unleashing pirates and typhoons.

Kilworth creates a believalbe narrator in Max with his blog. By giving the voice firmly in the child’s perspective, he delivers a sense of wonder and terror as events gain momentum.

I’m not as blown away by the book as I was by Attica but it is an intriguing mix of fantasy and science fiction.
