Tarantino ground down?
Just saw this article on the BBC about the first weekend gross of Tarantino’s Grindhouse. It’s not done as well as first thought on the opening weekend and, of course, movie execs are a little miffed. But have they not been reading Long Tail (blog here), Chris Anderson’s book about the changing nature of the entertainment market?
His analysis shows that the market is flattening out from the top sellers with the extensive availability of backlist and smaller movies. Even if it had a huge weekend, the slump from the analysis of previous blockbusters shows it dies away very quickly.
On a personal note, would I watch a three hour plus film in the cinema? No. I’ll buy the DVD where I can stop it if needs be and watch in the comfort of my own home. Probably with the attention of the cat. Three hours demands many cups of tea.
