Sympathy for the Devil - Last night’s Supernatural
Last night’s Supernatural was one that pleasantly surprised me. In the vein of the first series, the episode got down to the bones of the Black Dog myth (though it seemed tamer than the Black Shuck stories from the Fens) and built a solid, reliable story. As such it didn’t move the earth but the kicker at the end with the bargain making?
At some level I thought it was a bit of a cop out but on reflection it follows the pattern of the series in that nothing is as black and white as the brothers would like. They’ve got to deal with the fact that their father made a deal with the thing he was hunting to save them; what sort of deal will they be bound to by the end of the series? (For it seems that’s the way its going.)
I did enjoy the demon’s blunt honesty by pointing out that it was the only one who was abiding by the rules of the contract. Little touches like that are nice. It brought out the Fasutian side of the pact.
