Radio Four

Just occasionally (yes, a blue moon was indeed in the sky above me) sitting in traffic jams can be useful. Whilst try to get to work this morning, the Today programme on Radio Four had an article about the current vogue for thanks at the front of books.

There was a nice little comment about writing that does seems true to a certain degree. Has writing fiction now become like watercolours in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - a past time to show accomplishment? For sure you have, and I trust always will have, writers who are interested in the art as a craft.

This isn’t an “the Internet has lowered the barrier to entry considerably” post since there is also, it appears from the ads in my newspaper, an increase in creative writing courses. Yes you too can be a writer/reader/proofreader/editor (please cross through as applicable)! Is this a good thing - well yes and no. The value though will alsways be in the eye of the beholder. Intriguing through that it is ifction rather than non-fiction that appears to be growing in such a fashion.
